Urban Roots brings together watercolors in which Genya Krikova condenses architectural fragments from various European cities into her own form structure. Historicist, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco-inspired facade elements create a recognizable repertoire, which she combines into soft color fields and an overlying network of fine lines. Perspective plays only a secondary role; the structures appear less constructed and more organically developed.
The series emerges against the backdrop of repeated changes in location and describes a visual method of orientation that does not rely on narrative scenes, but rather on stable architectural anchor points.
